The Chequers in Wimbotsham, Norfolk. First licensed in 1794 it's a proper Fenland pub which retains its character and clientele, despite it being incongruously surrounded by new builds and wealthy retirees .  Together the newcomers have conspired to push house prices in the village to around £350,000 for a two bedroom bungalow, way out of reach of anyone employed locally. People that can afford those prices  don't go to pubs that serve bikers or patrons in a string vest and braces. Yet, despite the odds, The Chequers abides.
