Suffolk Church Warden Dr Brian Jones, keeping vigil at St Ethelbert's in Hessett by 'champing' out. The Grade 1 building is currently undergoing renovations and has scaffold erected on it's exterior walls. Fearing that the church may become a target for lead theft he is spending every night at the church until work is complete in December. Two of the four churches in the benefice have been subject to theft recently and Dr Jones says "I'm locked in the church and if I did hear anything I would turn the lights on to try and frighten any criminals away. If that doesn't work my plan is to phone the police on my mobile, but if there's no signal then I would try and ring the church bells which would attract the attention of houses across the road and they could use their land lines."
