A demonstration against the prorogation of Parliament meets some opposition in King’s Lynn, Norfolk.

In defiance of the clear and unequivocal instruction by the British electorate to leave the European Union in the 2016 Referendum, opponents, many with undeclared interests in maintaining the federal relationship sought to overturn the democratic will of the country and reverse the decision to leave. Despite the efforts of then Prime Minister Boris Johnson to avoid a no deal Brexit many obstacles were put in his way. As such, with the October 31st deadline for leaving looming, on September 10th 2019 he prorogued Parliament which effectively cancelled the sitting of the House and further discussion on the issue. This led to demonstrations across the nation and was subsequently declared unlawful. As a result, Parliament resumed sitting on September 25, 2019.

Shippea Hill rail station in Cambridgeshire. The request-only stop was once famous for being the least used station in Britain. In latter years it became more popular as migrant workers commuted from the villages surrounding the Ely interchange to catch the 07.17 train for the nine minute ride to Shippea Hill where they would be mini-bussed to the packhouses of the Fens which surround the towns of Soham and Mildenhall. However, during the Covid pandemic demand fell away as many workers returned to their countries of origin when it was thought that having the jab would become a condition of employment.

“Foreign cigarettes and hand rolling tobacco are not subject to the strict regulation and control measures that would benefit UK authorised sale items and in most cases have not had UK duty paid on them. Distribution and sale of illicit / counterfeit goods is linked to serious and organised crime and nationally is a drain on the economy.”

British Union of Fascism graffiti in Aylsham

Graffiti showing the insignia of the British Union of Fascists on the walls of a building in Aylsham, Norfolk, UK, reading Stand By The King, referring to the 1936 abdication crisis . The BUF political movement enjoyed some popularity in rural East Anglia during the 1930s as it opposed the Queen Anne’s Bounty, a tax that was laid upon farmers by the Church of England. If the farmer refused to pay the tithe the church commissioners would send bailiffs to enforce the debt, removing livestock or farm machinery. BUF members known as Blackshirts and led by Oswald Mosley could be called upon by the landowner to defend the property, by force if necessary. The longevity of the markings is attributed to the fact the are made in bitumen.
