Signage in Oxborough, Norfolk, protesting the Labour government's proposal to levy inheritace tax on agricultural estates.

The Labour government’s Autumn Budget, announced October 30, 2024, proposed changes to inheritance tax (IHT) on agricultural estates, effective April 6, 2026. Agricultural Property Relief (APR) and Business Property Relief (BPR) will offer 100% tax relief only up to £1 million of combined asset value per estate. Beyond this, a 50% relief applies, taxing the excess at 20%. Payments can be spread interest-free over 10 years. Aimed at wealthier estates and tax avoidance, the policy is expected to raise £200 million annually. Critics, especially farmers, argue it threatens family farms, despite government claims it affects only 500 estates yearly.
