Agostinho from Slovakia waits by the Britannia Cafe for the agency minibus to take him to work. A 'limb' worker in Wisbech, he has no contract of employment and is often employed on a daily or hourly basis.
Limb workers are defined under Section 230(3)(b) of the Employment Rights Act 1996 as someone who works under a contract to personally do work or services for a company, but isn’t fully self-employed or running their own business. More often known as the ‘gig economy’ workers get basic rights like minimum wage and paid holiday, but not full employee rights like unfair dismissal protection. Uber & Deliveroo are two of best known employers of such practises.
